Nkomo Laboratory: Practical Evaluations to Safeguard Users and Networks

Nkomo Laboratory: Practical Evaluations to Safeguard Users and Networks

Throughout June 2026, the Telecommunications Regulatory Board’s Laboratory for Equipment and Terminal Testing and Certification, located in Yaoundé–Nkomo, hosted weekly sessions every Thursday and Friday. These gatherings provided hands-on demonstrations and technical trials of electronic communication devices undergoing the certification process.

The primary objective of these sessions was to train the Board’s staff in the handling and assessment of smartphones intended for sale in Cameroon.

The initial phase focused on 2G and 3G technologies. Measurements carried out confirmed that the devices complied with regulatory requirements, thereby validating the control protocols implemented by the Board. These early results strengthen the credibility of the certification procedures and serve as a benchmark for subsequent stages.

Beyond the technical verification itself, the sessions play a strategic role for TRB. They help consolidate internal expertise, harmonize practices across departments, and ensure that devices placed on the market meet standards of quality, safety, and interoperability. By training teams on real equipment, TRB guarantees that its oversight remains relevant in the face of rapidly evolving mobile technologies.

The importance of these tests is also measured in terms of consumer protection and market confidence. Properly evaluated equipment reduces the risks of interference, malfunction, or non‑compliance that could harm users or disrupt networks.

Future sessions will broaden the scope of verification to other technological and functional aspects of terminals. Each new series of tests will refine evaluation methods and integrate lessons learned from previous phases, ensuring comprehensive coverage of certification criteria.

TRB reaffirms its commitment to maintaining rigorous controls and continuing these training and evaluation activities, which are essential to support technological transition and safeguard consumer interests.
