INSPECTION AT MTN CAMEROON: TRB REVIEWS INVESTMENTS AND PROJECTIONS TO STRENGTHEN QoS

The Telecommunications Regulatory Board (TRB) conducted yesterday, April 13, 2026, a working mission at MTN Cameroon’s facilities in the Akwa district of Douala. The purpose was to assess the implementation of the operator’s 2025 investment plan and to examine projections for 2026, within the framework of the regulator’s permanent mechanism for monitoring the quality of electronic communications services (QoS).

A meeting, jointly chaired by Professor Philémon Zoo Zame, Director General of the TRB, and Wanda Matandela, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Cameroon, provided an opportunity to take stock of investments that have notably enhanced data capacity, improved call quality, and reinforced network resilience.

The regulator emphasized the importance of compliance with service standards and national coverage objectives, while highlighting persistent challenges related to energy supply and infrastructure. MTN Cameroon presented corrective measures, including the modernization of power systems and data centers.

Looking ahead to 2026, the operator intends to continue expanding its network, strengthen service reliability, and deploy advanced technologies such as IMS-VoLTE, in preparation for 5G. MTN Cameroon also confirmed a global envelope of nearly 300 million US dollars for the period 2025–2027 to support Cameroon’s digital transformation.

Discussions underscored the growing predominance of 4G, now the dominant technology, while 2G and 3G continue to decline. This evolution highlights the need for sustained investment and inclusive access, particularly in rural areas.

Through this working visit, the TRB reaffirmed its central role: ensuring that operators’ commitments translate into tangible results and supporting the country’s digital development. On Tuesday, the sector regulator is expected to visit Orange Cameroon and IHS Cameroon, a company specializing in the management and development of telecommunications infrastructure.
