Expanding Horizons in TRB–ITU Cooperation

Expanding Horizons in TRB–ITU Cooperation

On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, the Director General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Board (TRB) received in audience Ms. Sehenoarinjakamalala Tahiry Rakotoheriniaina, Regional Representative of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for Central Africa and Madagascar.

Welcoming his guest to the Platinum Building, Professor Philémon Zoo Zame recalled the fruitful collaboration already initiated with her predecessor, while underscoring the importance of revitalizing the training component. For her part, Ms. Rakotoheriniaina, accompanied by close collaborators, conveyed the appreciation of Dr. Cosmas Zavazava, Director of the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau, for the warm reception extended during his recent visit to Cameroon. She reaffirmed ITU’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the TRB.
The discussions highlighted several priority areas: regulation of satellite connectivity and space systems, acceleration of 5G regulation, data security and protection, oversight of fiber optic infrastructure, and capacity building initiatives.

In this context, two major projects were announced. The first is a training program on digital regulation and artificial intelligence, scheduled for September 2026 and hosted by Cameroon for French speaking countries. The second is a training session under the African Girl Can Code program, to be held in October 2026 in Yaoundé, bringing together one hundred young Francophone women under the age of 25.

The audience concluded with a tour of the TRB’s technical facilities, notably the platforms for monitoring service quality (QoS) and electronic communications traffic. At the close of the visit, the ITU representative commended the TRB for the relevance of its investments and the meticulous work accomplished.
